The construction of carbonyl compounds via carbonylation reaction using a safe CO source remains a long-standing challenge to synthetic chemists. Only few methods used CO2 as a CO source because of its inertness but also due to its inherent reactivity that delivers preferably carboxylation products. In this work, we report a new electro synthetic approach to use CO2 as a CO source in dual metal catalysis and a non-sacrificial electrode system. We propose the coupling of the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to CO with the Ni-catalyzed carbonylation of benzyl chlorides. This method allowed obtaining a bench of symmetric ketones with good to excellent yields.
