Soap Film based Artificial Photosynthesis – SoFiA
Project Objective: Develop a radically new technology to overcome the scientific and engineering roadblocks towards commercialization of Artificial Photosynthesis.
Abstract of talk:
The EU-funded SoFiA project is developing soap films as photocatalytic membranes, integrated as building blocks in a scalable architecture, using stream of regenerative soap bubbles, continuously flowing through a conduit exposed to light. The concept uses molecular catalysts and photosensitizers to form self-assembled catalytic surfaces at the junction between soap bubble pairs.
It proposes a technology paradigm shift through this responsible research & innovation project, aimed at developing renewable solar fuel production, exploiting the unique self-assembling property of surfactants, and proton transport properties in soap films. The project has designed the concept of an economic artificial photosynthetic membrane in form of stable soap film with engineered photocatalytic surfaces.
The presentation will begiven by Dr. Indraneel Sen who is the project manager working with Coordinator Prof. Leif Hammarström from Uppsala University Sweden. The talk will introduce the foundational concepts and the premises under which they were developed. The workplan, the current status of the project tasks, and future plans will be shared.
