While very promising results are continuously being published to address the still somewhat lacking performance*stability product for AM1.5 / outdoor OPV devices, there are less demanding markets where OPV can initially be commercialized. One of these is the indoor PV (IPV) market, which Epishine is currently delivering products to. Deployed as an IPV platform, OPV can truly utilize its unique combination of features such as non-toxicity, tunable bandgap, shatter immunity and ease of integration.
For the IPV case the odds are instead stacked in favor of OPV. Less than 1/100 of the flux, spectrum confined to the visible and very moderate climate; room temperature and an absolute absence of hailstorms. Here, OPV is no long struggling in the up-hill battle to catch up to the gold standard of silicon, rather it is a prime contender in terms of performance and arguably the leader in terms of price*performance in comparison to other semiconductors. Still, the path from lab to fab+market requires a combination of science and engineering as well as an appreciation for where the (scalable) market opportunities lie.
In this talk, the path from idea to product will be discussed in moderate detail.
