My talk will focus on the processes of charge separation and recombination in organic bulk heterojunction and planar organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells. Experimentally it will be based around the use of transient absorption, photovoltage and photocurrent measurements on films and devices. In the organic solar cells, I will focus in particular upon the impact of film morphology, and particularly the presence of both pure and molecularly mixed domains, in influencing charge carrier dynamics and in particular the geminate recombination losses from bound polaron pairs. I will draw upon examples of studies from my group on polymer / fullerene blends and on blends employing a range of non-fullerene acceptors. I will then go on to consider the charge carrier dynamics in planar solar cells employing a methylammonium lead halide photoactive layer and PEDOT:PSS & PCBM charge collection layers. Finally I will consider the role of piezo- and ferro-electric fields in stabilising charge separation in light absorbing junctions and semiconductors.
