Fully-tuneable ternary composition NbxW1–xS2: A promising electrocatalyst for Electrocatalytic Reactions.
Transition metal chalcogenides have received significant attention owing to their novel electronic structures and properties that depend on their reduced dimensionality. Composition modulation is an effective way to engineer their crystal/electronic structures for expanded applications. Here functional TMD composition have been synthesized via colloidal synthesis and then characterized their structure and composition using systematic microscale/atomic scale analyses to show a complete composition tuning. The incorporation of Nb into the semiconducting 2H phase WS2 led to a conversion to the metallic 2H phase. Atomic-resolution STEM identified the atomic distributions when the composition was tuned from x = 0 to 1. We investigated the electrocatalytic activity of NbxW1–xS2 nanosheets for the HER in an acidic electrolyte, showing a volcano-type composition dependence. The Gibbs free energy along the HER pathway on the basal plane and the edge was calculated to explain the experimental results.
