Organic electron transporting materials (ETMs) are very attractive for various electronic applications including organic solar cells, organic field effect transistors and organic light-emitting diodes. Among organic ETMs, small molecules based on naphthalene diimide (NDI) semiconducting core show excellent electron transporting properties and high thermal stability. In this work, we present a series of small molecular NDI-based ETMs having different N-substituted side groups and their electronic applications. In NDI-based ETMs, their physical properties including thermal stability and solubility strongly depend on the characteristics of N-substituted side groups. In addition, molecular orientation of NDI cores in the crystalline states are also strongly depend on N-substituted side groups. For example, NDI compounds having N-substituted cyclic groups with simultaneous alicyclic and aromatic characteristics exhibit high thermal stability as well as high solubility in common organic solvents, which are related to temporal stability of electronic devices and low-temperature solution processability, respectively. In addition, we perform THz spectroscopy based on organic nonlinear optical crystals to NDI single crystals.
