A simple cost effective method has been employed for mass production of surfactant free α-Fe2O3 nanocrystals. α-Fe2O3 microparticles were fabricated initially by continuous spray pyrolysis (CoSP) technique and de-agglomerated into α-Fe2O3 nanocrystals by mechanical grinding using mortar and pestle. Aqueous solution of Iron (III) nitrate was used as the precursor solution for preparation of as synthesized α-Fe2O3 microparticles. The structural properties were investigated through X-ray diffraction. The crystal unit cell of the nanocrystals was found to be rhombohedral. Formation of pure α phase of α-Fe2O3 was confirmed by raman spectroscopy. The morphology and microstructure of the samples was studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The broadening in XRD peaks of nanocrystals as compared to as synthesized microspheres pointed towards formation of nanocrystals of smaller size of 8-10 nm, confirmed from TEM images. Also, effect of grinding time on optical, structural, morphological and photocatalytic properties has been investigated.
