Within our strategic photovoltaic program, defined by “Working with SunshineTM”, Merck is interested in materials used for and in various existing photovoltaic technologies (e.g. liquid electrolytes, electrolyte components, organic hole transport materials, semiconductor polymers, etching pastes and even anti-reflective coatings). In this presentation we will focus on our development of the electrolyte materials for use in the dye-sensitised solar cells (DSSC’s) and Perovskite PV.
Both the liquid electrolyte used in the DSSC and the solid-state electrolyte used in Perovskite PV have been reported to show the highest performance when they contain a Cobalt(III) complex as a dopant in the organic hole transport layer (HTL). Following that, we investigated the application of a variety of dopants and additives to Perovskite PV with our materials in the HTL that have been used for solid-state DSSC, referred to as spiro-MeOTAD, and demonstrated PCE >12% and VOC> 1V with significantly reduced energy loss at the HTL interfaces.
