Solar cells based on perovskites have recently become a very promising technology based on low cost materials and the perovskite solar cells show very high efficiencies. However the solar cell perovskites generally contain lead, which is toxic, and this may be detrimental for future commercialization of these solar cells. Also tin based perovskite show photovoltaic properties, however, the tin based perovskites are rather unstable. In this presentation we show results from bismuth based perovskite materials with different spectroscopic techniques and show that these perovskites have photovoltaic properties. We find that the material properties and photovoltaic efficiency can be changed by changing the cations in the perovskite structure. For the bismuth perovskite solar cells with cesium the power conversion efficiency is over 1%. The bismuth perovskites are also found to be rather stable and the solar cell devices do not degrade for at least one month. We therefore conclude that the bismuth perovskite is very promising for further development of the perovskite solar cells, and may be essential for future commercialization of perovskite solar cells because it is lead-free.
